Catherine Meier

Be still. Be Silent.

There are places in this world that demand, even extract these responses from us. Places so expansive, so vast that we quickly look to locate ourselves within them. We work to distinguish the difference between memories revealed, the mirage unfolding at the corner of the mind’s eye, and the reality of earth and sky, dirt and rock, light and shadow before
us.

My drawings and prints endeavor to reconcile the distance between the external, physical landscape of the earth, and the internal, intricate landscape of the human mind. They are expressions, artifacts; experiences that strive to bring together time and place, memory and present reality, the abstract realm of horizon and the specificity of a place.

And above all, I desire to visualize the complex relationship between vast, open, sparsely populated landscapes and the people that inhabit them. Environments such as the sweeping grasslands of the Great Plains or the broad, arid steppes of Mongolia. Places with few tangible remnants of human occupation but that are, nonetheless, embedded in the psyche of those that dwell there.
