The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking

Mary Robinson

I began the Lifeworld series during a Summer 2008 printmaking residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium, as part of a group portfolio project titled Love/Death/Life/Soul. While in residency at FMC, I frequently walked through the Kasterlee woods, taking photographs and sketching. The Lifeworld series represents an attempt to communicate my experience of walking through the woods. I try to visually translate the stimulation which began with my eyes and skin and, like nutrients moving from tree roots through trunk to branches, traveled via my synapses, breath and blood throughout my body. The handstitching on Lifeworld: Circulation serves primarily as a visual element, representing the circulation of energy.
