20/20 Vision The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking |

Brian Johnson 10 years ago, a graduate student of Tim High’s; now a professional artist/printmaker, master printer and university instructor, far removed from being a “student printmaker”. However, teaching multiple levels of printmaking, often puts me back in that place... Recognizing an affinity and love of the medium & process is followed by a voracious need to learn everything you can about it through experimentation and much consultation with “the expert” (i.e. the teacher) Once one has been thoroughly immersed, an air of confidence, verging on arrogance, sets in. Sooner or later, this is followed by surprise and awe that there are many others beyond the small circle of peers creating wonderful things with these same processes. Often with great humility, one finds they have unknowingly become a member of an artistic subculture filled with an inclusive and generous people willing to sharing their experience. One soon realizes they are now a part of the human matrix that is the “cult of printmaking”. I’ll always appreciate Tim and the many other “experts” that have touched my life and art.
