20/20 Vision The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking |

Sydney Cross As an Artist/Teacher my work in printmaking, drawing and painting addresses the concern I have for nature and its connection to the human condition. I see a clear link between the abuse and exploitation of the environment and the way people interact in the world. Human nature, as observed through the media and global events, is where the imagery is mined. The disparity between images within the same piece is meant to provoke curiosity and pose questions about contemporary experiences. I feel compelled to represent the duality of human interaction in the hopes of stirring the viewer’s recognition of the consequences of one’s behavior. The nature of teaching studio influences my work both technically and conceptually. Teaching is a privilege. The studio culture of teaching and working with students is unique and dynamic, based on one to one dialogue and group critique. In Printmaking, a community is fostered not just through the sharing of equipment, but, through the sharing of ideas, experiences, and resources. As a result, an exchange between students is forged that shapes their individual directions. Having the opportunity to interact with students is stimulating, and, their successes rewarding, but most of all they afford me the critical and challenging perspective that I need to continue to grow as an artist, a teacher, and as human being.
