20/20 Vision The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking |
|||||||||
David Johnson Relief printmaking is the oldest and most primitive print method. I can make woodcuts and linocuts on my kitchen table or in my back room or basement and print them with a wooden spoon. Due to the thick black lines and chunky shapes relief prints have a power and visual insistence that I appreciate and respond to. The primitive, ‘low-tech’ aspect amuses me and the possibilities relief prints have to make art democratic and available to people has great importance I believe. I have attempted to make relief prints that speak of our personal day to day politics of human interaction. I have tried to present images of human relations such as bullying, coercion, conspiracy, being wise guys together, mutiny, misery loving company, rebellion, fear and guilt. I find myself repeatedly delving into this theme. Yet I have increasingly made the environment more important that contains the figures. Environments now include, middle class suburbs, the student ghetto, urban decay and renewal and gentrification. I draw all my images from life presuming that may make them more personal and maybe even unique. I hope the prints take advantage of the rich qualities of the medium. I hope they are possibly amusing, and that they may even lead to some sort of social awareness and if I dare say it, improvement.
