The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking

John Hilton

The subjects of religion, identity, morality and southern culture dominate my most recent works. Growing up in a rural southern environment these subjects became paramount to my existence. Looking back on my own childhood I have found that it was often dark and filled with conflicting ideas about these subjects. I sift through these memories and try to make sense of the recurring themes buried deep in my subconscious.  Through these images I can relate my personal concerns as well as foster a dialogue with the viewer by relying on the commonality of the images. I feel the work asks fundamental questions but the answers are not always easy to find. Through the window of my imagination I attempt to understand life and communicate an idea in terms of my own sensibilities. The pieces appear as I work. I do not find it necessary to have a planned image. In working this way I am free to decide which image and issue to address and in which way to address them.

I am also very much a formalist and technical artist. The sensuality and physical process of art making have always been important to my process. I would rather be doing art than making art. Printmaking, drawing, painting; these are laborious, technical and time consuming media and therefore offer the environment and stimulation necessary for my thought process to unfold. Getting caught up in the “doing” of art allows me to explore the subject more in depth. Simply by working I see images and ideas emerging.  These are continually changing, just as my life’s unfolding narrative changes. The images are altered according to the needs of the piece. They become real, imagined, fragmented, and whole. From them I put together the pieces of my story; a translation of my experience.
