20/20 Vision The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking |

Michael Krueger My current drawings and prints are focused on memory and history. The images often illustrate how the past is frequently interrupted by the present. I am interested in recanting history though art and creating narrative scenes that will provoke thoughtful reconsidering of past events. These observations on history and culture are filtered through my own idiosyncratic view of the world. I am interested in a folding of time with an attention paid to past transgressions and the subtle placing of a cautionary tone. I have chosen to make drawings because the act of drawing itself is an intimate act and a very personal means of expression. Lost Boys - This print is a very limited edition with a total of only 8 prints in the edition. Lost Boys is the retelling of a report of two young boys who fled Lawrence during Quantrill's raid. The boys sought shelter in a wooded area west of town, clad only in their nightshirts and carrying a gun. The artist considers the possibility the boys fled to a location in what is now Lawrence's Centennial Park, a public skateboarding area. The park has features similar to those described in the account of the two boys' harrowing adventure. By including the ramps and stairs of the skateboard park in Lost Boys, Krueger recasts the past in terms of the present. As the artist has written: “I like the idea of putting these two lost boys in the landscape with elements of the skateboard park in their midst. This local park is frequented every day by boys their same age – a poignant turn in history.”
