20/20 Vision The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking |

Katherine Nanfro My book piece “The Rescue” exemplifies the fundamental use of metaphor and narrative in my art. I often work with animal imagery as well as imagery that I can link to both personal and contemporary cultural associations. I set up scenes with overarching themes of good versus evil, predator to prey, weak versus strong. My prints depict animals coming into contact with either animals stronger than themselves or villains such as Dracula or symbols of technology such as helicopters. There is often the appearance of an imminent threat, but rarely the kill that animal documentary filmmakers covet. My drawing style references ideas of a child-like hand or false naiveté. The pop-up book format of this lithograph also references a book-form that was originally created for child viewers. Ultimately, I am interested in ideas of an alternate reality where animals, people, and landscapes that would never co-exist are seen together and have an epic meeting that resists the expected narrative climax.
