20/20 Vision The Art of Contemporary University Printmaking |
|||||||||
Trudie Teijink My work is characterized by the use of a combination of different print techniques in one and the same piece. Using these print techniques I create single hybrid pieces, challenging the historic roots of printmaking, which, of course, are found in the production of multiple exact copies. In line with this departure from tradition, my work also explores printing on non-traditional media such as plastics. Furthermore, I am investigating the possibilities that the third dimension offers to an inherently two-dimensional technique. As for the content of my work, its broader theme is about formation and decay and the effects of mere chance. One motivation for choosing these topics was the unavoidable rise and fall of everything and everyone, as dictated by one of the deepest of physical laws, namely that of the increase of entropy of the universe as a whole. Another motivation was life itself, with emphasis on the influence that the universal entropy law and mere chance inevitably have on the daily human life that we all live. I find significance in used domestic objects. I feel these items, once integral parts of people’s daily lives, have become the mute witnesses of fortune and tragedies. These important occasions are influenced by chance. Nature, on the contrary, is seemingly immune to chance, appearing perpetual and static. Visual elements playing prominent roles in my art are for example: drains, old wallpaper, used silverware, plates and cups, wooden dinner tables, and houses. They represent the human side of the story. On the other end of the scale are sky views, galaxies, trees, and water surfaces. By presenting these types of imagery to viewers I give them an opportunity to fill in the story, either the one that I try to tell, or a story based on their own imagination and memories.
