The Jackson Street Chronicles (found images from the street)

Three years ago an entire body of work began to reveal itself to me, asking to be identified and catalogued. On my walks to the Lamar Dodd School of Art along the mile long Jackson Street, in Athens, Georgia, I began to realize this collection of drawings in “tar” by the Athens, Clark County Road Department.

My own work, in the last decade has become more abstract and minimal in its own nature, so it seemed natural to borrow these found images and call them my own. I am in no way original in this discovery, just another in an ongoing group of appreciators of the visual experience, wherever it may be found.

I look at Jackson Street as a kind of book, a scroll; laid out completely, telling a beautiful story, just looking for its Rosetta stone to unravel its message.

I thank the Athens, Clark County Road Department for its beautifully natural, honest way it has created this body of work.
