Kristin Casaletto Artist Statement Despite many positive aspects of twenty-first century living (digital transmissions, more instant gratification than ever, ability to research almost anything independently, and so on.), some negative trends persist: a bias toward short-term thinking, power imbalances, etc. These are not new problems; only their modern particulars are. There is a hesitation in determining what constitutes just action both abroad (witness problems in Darfur and Iraq, for example) and at home—the fiftieth anniversary of Emmett Till’s murder is a haunting reminder of this for me. I feel uneasy, perhaps the reason my work recently has taken a turn toward admonition and unsettling premonition.
