Art of Thinking

back to Outreach

In fall 2008, after careful planning with Louisville Academy principal Hulet Kitterman, the Gallery launched a six-week pilot of our Art of Thinking program. Using artistic expression as a means of teaching basic categorical distinctions, this program provides Louisville Academy fourth graders with a weekly afternoon program of guided observational, discussion, and artistic exercises designed to strengthen their conceptual appetites and abilities. In spring 2009, the Gallery rolled out the Art of Thinking to a group of eight Louisville Academy fourth graders with weekly sessions led by Gallery intern managers Dan Rekshan and Kelsey McMillan.  Plans are under way to expand the Art of Thinking to fourth graders at Thomas Jefferson Academy in the fall semester of 2009 and to children at Wrens Elementary School and Carver Elementary School in Wadley in 2010.
