The actual process of making a painting is just as
important as the finished piece.
Each painting has a life of its own that is in
constant flux, and each stage of its development is
equally as important as the next.
My work retains traces of the process since I do
not like to mask these with superficial finishing
touches. Denying
evidence of the process takes away the passion that went
into making a particular work.
My
interests currently lie in visualizing the art making
process. I use
mixed media paintings in a way that celebrates the
process of mark-making and making art, while maintaining
my theme of chronological time, (a concept that also
gives me inspiration).
I work on a large format so that by Combining
drawn and painted images in a pictorial way, I can
honor each faceted area of the canvas as having its
own place in time and space.
Throughout my work, visual symbols are used to
represent significant parts of my life.
Whether I represent a dog, architectural
structures, or a swimming pool, I layer images that not
only relate to my passage of time, but also relate to
other people’s lives.
In
my latest body of work I depict two aspects of time:
process – the time during which a painting travels from
bare canvas to being hung on a gallery wall, and
chronological time – layered nostalgic symbols that
represent a journey.
By showing these two different aspects of time I
hope to create a richer experience that I believe will
lead to a deeper level of appreciation for the viewer.
